Promoting trade and tourism relations between Guatemala and Canada

Guatemala, January 2018.- The Canadian Guatemalan Chamber of Commerce (CANCHAM) works to promote commercial and tourism relations between Guatemala and Canada through a robust trade agenda that seeks to increase the level of trade and tourism between both countries.

With the support of the Ministry of Economy of Guatemala and Cropa Panalpina, the presentation was carried out with general information about the Canadian market, disclosing the main consumer products, import and export figures and the interest that exists as well as advantages of market towards several products that are produced in our country.

It is reported that the trade has grown in the two countries in the last seven years by 17.3%. In 2017, Guatemala exported $ 147.7M to Canada. According to the Office of Trade Facilitation in Canada, by 2018 there are several trends in the Canadian market that need attention, including:

• Oriental vegetables and fresh fruits that continue to experience rapid growth in demand.

• Superfood, you can see a boom in the demand for this type of food such as: moringa powder. There is a tendency to use this type of products for nutritional supplements and shakes, either powder, liquid or lyophilized for the snack sector.

• Vegetarian and Vegan Foods, the demand for vegetable-based products continues to increase. Proteins of vegetable origin such as beans, soy, nuts, as well as vegan versions of conventional products such as ice cream and yogurt.

• Cloths of climate control material used to make sportswear are seeing strong demand in the market. Sportswear with this type of technology is having a boost in demand for both women, men and children.

Canada for Guatemala occupied, during the year 2016, as commercial partner of exports position number 7 and imports position number 24. By May of 2017 it continues in the same position for exports, and position number 26 for imports.

Canada is the second largest country in the world in territorial extension and has a small and concentrated population, within its main characteristics the particular climate of the region stands out as well as the opportunity to find six regional markets. The Canadian consumer is culturally intelligent, knows prices, and is interested in the history and origin of the product, which represents a window of opportunity for small and medium enterprises that can present this information in a relevant way. Finally, the quality of the product is decisive for the purchase decision.

The Canadian market is different from the US market, so the Guatemalan Canadian Chamber of Commerce recommends that those interested go directly to their offices to be able to inquire in greater detail and make different inquiries, for example, the packaging must carry information in English and French ; the laws are very strict in terms of packaging and labeling.

The market is open but highly competitive and it is important that each supplier cultivates long-term relationships.
